This post about the best of the WordPress Plugins for a CMS website was originally published on the Fatty Matty Brewing brewlog on June 19, 2009.
After using WordPress for so long on this Fatty Matty Brewing blog, I decided to use WordPress as a CMS (content management) with a few new clients’ websites including Greenspirit Farm and Free Congregation of Sauk County. Each of these unique clients has different business communication needs from WordPress and with the huge amount of WordPress plugins available, I knew I could pretty much accomplish any requests for website customization.
This list of WordPress plugins gives your website flexability to perform tons of fat website functions.
Akismet – A must have spam catcher for ALL WordPress websites!
BrewPoll – For all you beer bloggers… Adds a BrewPoll icon to each post on your blog.
WordPress Database Backup – On-demand backup of your WordPress database. Have you backed up your WordPress database today? Do this before you upgrade to WordPress 2.8!
Force User Field Registration – Forces new users to register additional fields. As a WordPress admin, it is nice to know that your website’s members are human.
Google XML Sitemaps – This plugin will generate a sitemaps.org compatible sitemap of your WordPress blog which is supported by Ask.com, Google, MSN Search and YAHOO!.
Login Configurator – Sick of looking at the WordPress logo on your website? Get your company logo on the WordPress registration / login page.
Multi Column Category List – Want to create a WordPress Page with a list of categories? See the Recipes Category list at the bottom of this page. Requires the use of WordPress Page Templates and some custom coding.
Page Links To – This plugin allows you to point a post or page to any URL you want. Very useful if you want a WordPress Page to link an external URL.
Simple Login Widget – If you are using WordPress as a CMS, this simple widget will show just the login/logout and register links instead of all the RSS and Meta Feed crap.
Drop-down menu – Add a cool drop down style page menu to your WordPress theme.
Event Calendar – After a ton of searching for the perfect Event Calendar plugin – this one is the BEST!
Inline Posts – Allows you to include dynamic WordPress posts in your static WordPress pages (and in other posts). See an example here.
Simple:Press Forum – as far as I can tell (and there are not many to choose from) the best WordPress Forum Plugin. See a brand new installation of this WordPress Forum plugin here.
One of the design purposes here is to showcase funky CMS themes which are my favorites from the WordPress.org > Extend Free Themes Directory. My website (at least this one) has many fat features, one of which is using a sidebar Theme Switcher. I have installed the Theme Switcher Reloaded WordPress plugin which lets you flip between all the installed WP themes on this website. The theme switcher is a sidebar widget which displays multiple theme designs and for this website needs to be active in “sidebar 1″ – always.
The first Zeitgeist movie was amazing, insightful and eye opening. The second movie, Zeitgeist Addendum shows the absurdity of the money driven systems which profit from war. As it stands in our world today, there is a system of corporations which make up the same super-small percentage of people on this planet who own all the wealth. An elite upper-crust of powerful secret leaders.
Freedom and happiness does not come from money and wealth. Can you eat the change in your pocket or the five dollar bill in your wallet? Personal relationships are what make us humans happy and technology that helps us build personal relationships with each other. When I was a little kid, I knew there was more to our existence than what my religious upbringing had to offer. Now I believe in thinking freely about life, spirituality and being me. Happiness comes from personal relationships and technology is a tool by which we can enhance our ability to communicate with each other.
Some people agree that communication via Facebook does not build personal relationships closer (which I may tend to agree with). However, Facebook just like WordPress websites, blogs, forums, social networks, Flickr, YouTube websites [technology communication tools] which give us the means to talk with each other.
The Zeitgeist Addendum uses many ideas from the Venus Project. The Venus Project is dedicated to solving many of the problems we face here in society using technology and thinking of the possabilities of living a whole new life to achieve freedom. Zeitgeist Addendum is a must see for all of you tired of living life with your eyes closed but it did leave me with a depressing aftertaste about who has the real control of this world that I love so much.
Here is a pull-out of what I think to be the most profound portion of the second Zeitgeist movie:
[FRESCO:]
“It’s not politicians that can solve problems. They have no technical capabilities. They don’t know how to solve problems. Even if they were sincere, they don’t know how to solve problems. It’s the technicians that produce the desalinization plants. It’s the technicians that give you electricity…that give you motor vehicles, that heat your house… and cool it in the summertime. It’s technology that solves problems, not politics. Politics cannot solve problems, because they are not trained to do so.
Very few people today stop and consider what it is that actually improves their lives. Is it money? Obviously not… One cannot eat money or stuff money into their car to get it to run… is it politics? – All politicians can do is create laws, establish budgets and declare war. Is it religion? Of course not…. Religion creates nothing except intangible emotional solace for those who require it.
The true gift that we have as human beings have, which has been solely responsible for everything that has improved our lives… is technology.
[TITLE: "TECHNOLGY"]
What is technology? Technology is a pencil, which allows one to solidify ideas on paper for communication. Technology is an automobile, which allows one to travel faster than feet would allow. Technology is a pair of eyeglasses, which enables sight for those who need it.
Applied technology itself is merely an extension of human attributes, which reduces human effort freeing humans from a particular chore or problem. Imagine what your life would be like today without a telephone… or an oven… or a computer… or an airplane. Everything in your home, which you take for granted, from a doorbell to a table to a dishwasher, is technology, generated from the creative, scientific ingenuity of human technicians… not money, politics or religion…These are false institutions.
This section of the Zeitgeist Addendum movie informs you about improving society by moving away from the Facist monetary system that we live in today, freeing ourselves from scarcity.
PART 4:
TEXT ON SCREEN:
“MY COUNTRY IS THE WORLD… AND MY RELIGION IS TO DO GOOD”
-THOMAS PAINE (1737-1809)
[NARRATION:]
The social values of our society, which has manifested in perpetual warfare, corruption, oppressive laws, social stratification, irrelevant superstitions, environmental destruction, and a despotic, socially different, profit oriented, ruling class, is fundamentally the result of a collective ignorance, of two of the most basic insights humans can have about reality… the EMERGENT and SYBIOTIC aspects of natural law.
The Emergent nature of reality, is that all systems, whether it is knowledge, society, technology, philosophy, or any other creation, will, when uninhibited, undergo fluid, perpetual change. What we consider commonplace today, such modern communication and transportation, would have been unimaginable in ancient times… likewise, the future will contain technologies, realizations and social structures, that we cannot even fathom in the present. We have gone from Alchemy, to chemistry…from a geocentric universe, to a heliocentric…from believing that demons where the cause of illness, to modern medicine. This development shows no sign of ending, and it is this awareness that aligns us and leads us on a continuous path to growth and progress. Static, Empirical knowledge does not exist…rather it is the insight of the emergence of all systems, we must recognize. This means we must be open to new information at all times, even if it threatens our current belief system and hence, identities.
Sadly, society today has failed to recognize this and the established institutions continue to paralyze growth, by preserving outdated social structures. Simultaneously, the population suffers from a fear of change as well, for their conditioning assumes a static identity, and challenging ones belief system, usually results in insult and apprehension, for being wrong is erroneously associated with failure.
When, if fact, to be proven wrong should be a celebrated, for it is elevating someone to a new level of understanding, furthering awareness. The fact is, there is no such thing as a smart human being, for it is merely a matter of time, before their ideas are updated, changed or eradicated. And this tendency to blindly hold on to a belief system, sheltering it from new, possibly transforming information, is nothing less than a form of “intellectual materialism”.
The monetary system perpetuates this materialism not only by its self preserving structures, but also through the countless number of people who have been conditioned into blindly, and thoughtlessly upholding these structures, therefore becoming ‘self-appointed guardians of the status quo”. Sheep, which no longer need a sheep dog to control them, for they control each other by ostracizing those who step out of the norm.
This tendency to resist change and uphold existing institutions for the sake of identity, comfort, power and profit, is completely unsustainable and will only produce further imbalance, fragmentation, distortion and invariably, destruction. It’s time to change.
From hunters and gathers, to the agricultural revolution, to the industrial revolution, the pattern is clear. It is time for a new social system, which reflects the understandings we have today.
The monetary system is a product of a period of time where scarcity was a reality. Now, with the age of technology, it is no longer relevant to society; gone with the aberrant behavior it manifests.
Last Christmas, I gave my sister a different kind of present. The present was to take her to Governor Dodge State Park and spend the day together in a canoe. We are going to take this trip on Saturday and I am so excited to be free with my big sister! The canoe idea is going include docking our canoe, leaving some of our stuff under the canoe and hiking to find a cave.
There are three caves at Gov Dodge which I have hiked to with my family. Officially though, there are only two caves on the state park trail map. The third cave is smaller than the other two and hard to find off the Pine Cliff trail.
There are over 40 miles of hiking trails at Governor Dodge SP which I do not plan on hiking all of. The trails that we have hiked are some of the most beautiful walks in my life. The Gold Mine Trail will take you to one of the two official caves and is easy to find just off the Twin Valley Lakes campground entrance. The Horse Trail (Interior Loop) is like the shortcut to and from the big cave. To find the big cave (there are many other ways) locate the Meadow Valley Trail which you can pick up from the Cox Hallow Beach, at the end of the parking lot past the concession stand. Head twards Twin Valley Lake using the Meadow Valley Trail. After a looooong walk, pick up the Cave Trail to the right and look for the “Cave” sign. You’ll find it.

Unlocking More Magic from another Free WordPress Plugin
Blog-in-Blog is a CMS friendly plugin which allows you to create category pages and assign WordPress blog posts to display on these pages.
How it works:
Use shortcode in a page to select a number of posts within a specified category. This page with the shortcode becomes your ‘blog’ page (you can of course call it what you will). [blog_in_blog category_id=1 num=10] Must specify the category_id. Optionally specify a number of posts, defaults to 10.
You can then optionally hide a specified category from the normal home page (there is an admin page for you to select the category).
Therefore, any posts with the chosen category are shown only on your page and not on the home page, so if you use WordPress as a CMS, you now have a blog within a blog.
If I only knew about this plugin when I started the Free Congregation website -argh!
